Over the past few years I have had clients who have been suffering with a variety of blood disorders such as Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Kuchichi, Graves syndrome, thyroid and glandular conditions, severe menopause symptoms and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. During a recent drive through a snowstorm I began to ponder a possible link between all these dis-orders of the body. On the whole they stem from a problem with the body attacking itself from within. Western medicine cannot pin point exactly the cause for these disorders and in many cases can offer no alleviation of symptoms. Often in cases such as arthritis and Lupus the medication is strong and whilst it helps in the short term it offers no long term solution and may even exacerbate the condition. The liver is responsible for detoxing the blood and is put under severe pressure processing strong medications prescribed. The stomach, spleen and small intestine are involved with the manufacture of blood and the large intestine, kidney and bladder with quality so to pinpoint an organ where these conditions originate is tricky, but Yin deficiency I have found common to all these conditions this leads to the weakening of organs which may serve as the catalyst for conditions to occur.
Yin deficiency means that the body is lacking in the moistening fluids that relax the body. In times of extreme stress the body can generate severe amounts of heat which burn off the yin fluids. Fearful situations produce adrenaline and contract the kidneys meaning the further loss of yin fluids. Blood is one of the manifestations of yin within the body therefore any severe blood loss caused by accidents, operations or menstruation will lead to a yin deficiency. For a man, to much sex and a woman, childbirth also involves the loss of fluids. So whilst conditions may manifest within organs and sometimes as a lack of Yang or energetic spark, I have found that supporting and building the Yin is an essential place to start for the body to stop attacking itself and to build strength and immunity. Every action needs to originate from the still Yin point within us so take time to let go of control and receive the magic that is possible if we practice the art of allowing.
At an emotional level it is good to know how to switch off and let the universe be in control for a while. Let go of your fear and trust. Practise yoga, meditation, walking on the beach, tai chi anything that takes us to the deep part of ourselves that can be nourished by rest and breath.
As for eating, choose food that nourishes the fluids and mineral balance within our body such as Seaweeds, Spiriulina and Chlorella. Wheatgrass and other Chlorophyll rich foods will build healthy blood and therefore boost Yin. Avoid stimulants such as fizzy drinks and coffee and look at how you are cooking. Are you using cooking methods such as baking and steaming or are you deep frying and microwaving? The latter two will weaken the blood and body.
The following recipe has become a favourite at the residentials I cook for. The oats support the kidney/bladder whilst the vanilla brings sweetness to the stomach/spleen, the berries are happiness for the heart/small intestine and the egg and milk supports the yin as a whole.
200g rolled oats
60g walnut pieces
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon sea salt
475ml almond milk/goats milk
1 large egg
60g unsalted melted butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
60ml maple syrup
2 or 3 ripe bananas
200g mixed berries
Butter a 20cm square (or anything similar) baking dish, chop the banana into medallions and line the base, cover with half of the berries. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl and the wet ingredients in a jug. Cover the fruits in the baking dish with the oat mixture and the remaining fruits sprinkle on top. Pour the milk mixture slowly over the oats and fruits and pop it in the preheated oven at 190 degrees for 45 minutes. It is both breakfast and dessert .
As I wrote earlier, I recently had to drive through the night to make it to an airport before a snowstorm did. I was very tired and I have to say it was very scary. I could feel my body heating up the more frightened I became. I could feel my kidneys contracting and my checks were flushed. It was me and my will power driving. The bladder meridian flows all the way down the back and the energy coursing through me felt almost vertical. So I decided that although I was going to make it to the airport on time I was going to take of years of my life and severely deplete my Yin in the process. So I decided to relax into the driving knowing I had the support of the universe to get me there. I had enough time to allow any magic to occur and that I would survive any situation. The magic was to really feel the field of consciousness and know that I was loved. The energy then began to feel horizontal and I relaxed into the large intestine area of my body. I can’t say it is an experience I would like to repeat but it enabled me to really supporting and preserving my Yin., I felt loved by the support of the universe and perhaps I gained some insights for this post, for that I am grateful. Without sustaining and valuing the Yin I feel truly serious conditions can occur or be created by the body ensuring it has no option but to slow down. To feel like you have to do everything yourself is exhausting so get horizontal, relax into the Yin and receive the love.
