In Chinese Medicine, food is designed not only to maintain health, but also to treat many ailments, such as the common cold, and more complex diseases like psoriasis, diabetes, hypertension, digestive problems, autoimmune disorders, and so forth. In order to use food medicinally, we must first understand some of the principles involved to recognise what foods are right for a person, at a particular time, and for a particular condition. Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking explains the basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine for a western audience in a modern kitchen, using everyday ingredients.
After successful completion of her undergraduate studies, Joanne travelled extensively, experiencing and studying different spiritual traditions such as Tibetan Buddhism, Shivananda Yoga, Zen Meditation and QiGong Movement. In 1998 she began her studies in Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has been an effective system of health care for over 3000 years. Shiatsu originated in Japan. It is both a form of physical therapy and a means to greater integration of body, mind and spirit. In the oriental view, all physical and emotional problems are viewed as disruptions in the body’s flow of life energy called Chi or Ki. The practice of Shiatsu requires a high standard of education, with a minimum of three years training with a recognised affiliated school, regulated by the European Shiatsu Federation and a minimum of 500 practice hours. All practitioners who are registered members of the Shiatsu Society are fully insured and adhere to a Code of Ethics. At present Joanne is Chairperson of the Shiatsu Society, which regulates the practice in Ireland.
After qualifying in 2002, as a Shiatsu Practioner, she set up a busy clinic specialising in the energy of food in North County Dublin and Dublin City Centre. In 2011 she began running regular cookery classes in Dublin City Centre and following the success of these entertaining and engaging sessions has been invited to speak at many events all over the country. The most recent being the innaugral Fibromyalgia Summit hosted by Arthritis Ireland. She hosts regular health retreats and is the Author of “Shiatsu & the Art of Conscious Cooking”, a cookbook full of Ancient Traditional Medicine, Acupressure points and meditations.
“I am passionate about the connection between how we feel and the food we choose. I am dedicated to helping people be well using the simple 5 element system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Understanding what your body is telling you through its symptoms and the food it craves is essential if you want to stay healthy and well. It is often a revelation how simple it can be to choose the right food at the right time. Your relationship with food is a mirror for your relationship with life. So rather than feeling bad or confused about what to eat, be in love with the conscious choices you make every time you put a scrumptious morsel in your mouth. Feel the love as the food gives you life.”Shiatsu & the Art of Conscious Cooking”
